Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Apes’ Rule for Second Weekend

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

This really isn’t all that shocking—the new releases this weekend didn’t win the hearts of any critics, and last weekend’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was the darling of the box office. It was only inevitable that the apes would conquer this weekend’s charts as well.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made itself another $36 million this weekend, for a hefty two-week total of $138.9 million. Unless something spectacular comes out next weekend, it looks like this film will continue pulling in strong numbers.

Fortunately for our new releases, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes left a decent amount of earnings to go around. The Purge: Anarchy made $28.3 million—while this is above its modest predicted gross, it wasn’t enough to topple last week’s big earner.

It was followed by the other new releases, Planes: Fire and Rescue and Sex Tape, which respectively earned $18 million and $15 million. They were followed by the tenacious (if disappointing) Transformers: Age of Extinction, which made another $10 million for a whopping total of $227.1 million.
