Watch Tom Cruise in the First Trailer for 'Oblivion'

Even in the distant future, Tom Cruise will be humanity's only hope.

That's the primary takeaway from the first trailer for Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion, an intriguing-looking slice of sci-fi/action-adventure that seems like it'll play a little like a cross between The Matrix, Predator, and Wall-E. From the film synopsis:

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Exactly what those questions are, and why Jack Harper needs to save the human race, are hinted at in the trailer, which -- like a lot of trailers these days -- could probably stand to give away a little less information. All in all, though, it's a nifty little piece of promotion, one that makes it clear Oblivion will attempt to entice sci-fi fans as well as filmgoers who simply can't get enough of Tom Cruise playing steely-eyed heroes named Jack.
