Watch the First Trailer for 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones'

The Mortal Instruments

Fear not, fans of supernatural tween drama: The Twilight Saga might be ending this weekend, but The Mortal Instruments will happily take your money.

The first installment in a would-be film franchise spun from the pages of Cassandra Clare's bestselling series of novels, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones plunges viewers into an age-old conflict with the very fate of the human race at stake -- just in time to watch our young hero (Lily Collins) discover that she has powers she never dreamed of. Here's the official synopsis for the movie, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 23, 2013:

Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray (Collins), discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother (Lena Headey), Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

If you read that and found the whole thing rather familiar, you aren't alone, but there's clearly a huge market for this stuff -- and if this trailer offers anything like an honest picture of the movie, we can at least be thankful that City of Bones will serve up plenty of action to go with its standard romance/magic prophecy child plotlines. More Harry Potter than Twilight in other words, which feels something like progress at this point.
