Watch the First 'Edge of Tomorrow' Trailer

Edge of Tomorrow

It has a title like a soap opera and one of the world's last true action stars in the lead, but Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow looks like it might actually be a pretty diverting blast of thinking person's sci-fi.

At least, that's most of what we were able to glean from this trailer, which starts off looking like yet another Earth-in-peril spectacle before taking an intriguing left turn into Source Code territory. In fact, there are moments when it looks like Tomorrow might be something like a full-on ripoff of the Jake Gyllenhaal movie about a soldier trapped in a horrifying time loop -- right down to the part where a woman might hold the key to everything.

Here, said woman is played by Emily Blunt, who knows a thing or two about time-travel movies -- she was the heart of the marvelous Looper -- and her presence provides a soulful anchor to the bursts of alien-slaying action that punctuate whatever else is going on here.

Anyone who's read the novel Edge of Tomorrow is based on, Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need Is Kill, should be able to tell how far afield Liman and Cruise have gone here; for now, consider us mildly optimistic for the main event when Tomorrow touches down on June 6, 2014.
