Warner Bros Reportedly Wants to Get 'Gremlins' Reboot Rolling

According to director Joe Dante, who directed the first Gremlins movie, there have been several attempts to make a new Gremlins movie in the past, but those were ultimately unsuccessful.

"I know that people have gone in with pitches, but nothing has caught their eye. But I'm not positive that it's entirely Warner Brothers' decision. Because it's an Amblin project, it probably has to be signed off on by [Steven] Spielberg," Dante told Bloody Disgusting back in September.

And therein lies the rub. If the decision was up to Warner Bros., there would have be 5 or 6 of these movies out by now. The decision was Spielberg's all along, and he hasn't seen anything that would make him want to do another one.

Warner Bros. is not giving up though. Vulture has heard the studio is giving the reboot idea another try and is engaged in talks with Spielberg's production banner Amblin Entertainment to get the movie rolling. Whether or not it'll happen this time is anyone's guess.

Starring Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, the first movie came out in 1984 and became a huge box office success, grossing over $150 million domestically while only costing about $11 million to make. However, the 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, bombed. About $50 million was spent to produce the sequel, but it only took in $41 million domestically.
