Tommy Wirkola Abandons 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' Sequel

Hansel Gretel Witch 2

In case any of you have been holding your breath for a Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters sequel, you might want to let it out and start pinning your hopes on something more reasonable. After hanging around waiting for Paramount and MGM to greenlight the follow-up -- and writing the script -- director Tommy Wirkola has decided to move on to other projects.

"I’ve just decided to not direct Hansel & Gretel 2," Wirkola shrugged in a recent interview. "I have been lately attached to a few more things. It’s just a matter of time and priorities."

While making it clear that he's turned the script in and adding that he's willing to be involved in some capacity if and when the sequel gets going, Wirkola added that he wants "to do something a little bit different now and not just do sequels."

Hansel co-star Jeremy Renner, whose lack of passion for the first film was widely noted during the press tour, claims he isn't attached for a sequel, but has rather hysterically suggested that he might do it if he has time.

Given that the studio seems interested in squeezing more money out of the (admittedly rather cool) idea of the titular fairy tale characters as grown-up, anachronism-wielding witch slayers, a sequel seems inevitable at some point -- but whether it'll involve the original cast, or have much of a resemblance to the original, is another question entirely.
