Thursday Box Office: "Straight Outta Compton" $5M; "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." $900K

Straight Outta Compton

In our podcast, Binh Ngo and I made some predictions for this week’s openers.

Binh’s pretty high on both films, but he’s giving the edge to “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” just because it’s opening in 3,638 theaters, about a thousand more than “Straight Outta Compton.” His numbers are $35M for “U.N.C.L.E.” and $30M for “Compton.” I have $15M and $25M for those films respectively, with “Compton” on top.

It looks like I’m right with the positioning of “Compton,” but Binh’s closer to the actual gross.

The Thursday evening numbers came out, and “Compton” collected an outta-this-world $5M. That’s about a million more than what “Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation” did in its Thursday evening before exceeding expectations with an eventual weekend opening of $56M.

Can the rap drama reach or exceed those numbers? [Update: Yes, it can.] It’s hard to say because films targeting the African-American audience tend to be very front-loaded. However, with great reviews (87% on Rotten Tomatoes), this could break out of that demo and become a more mainstream hit.

Regarding “U.N.C.L.E.”, it’s looking like I’m right on the mark, and Binh’s completely off. Guy Ritchie’s spy thriller only managed $900K for its Thursday evening screenings, which is a relatively soft number.

That’s less than what “Vacation” did in its Tuesday evening screenings ($1.2M), and that film disappointed. The comedy did managed to pull in $15M during its opening weekend, which is where “U.N.C.L.E.” looks like it’s headed for. After watching the film, this number sounds about right.

We’re getting an upset at the box office this weekend. Let’s see how high “Straight Outta Compton” will reach.
