'Texas Chainsaw 3D' Sequel Coming Despite Splat Between Producers

Texas Chainsaw 3D

Good news gore hounds. With a $21.7 million opening weekend, a sequel to Texas Chainsaw 3D is coming. How could it be otherwise? These movies are relatively cheap to make and the producers have planned ahead and acquired the rights to make 7 of these movies, including the first one. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Exec producer and Millennium Films Chairman Avi Lerner was thrilled with its box office performance, so much so that he told Deadline that "[w]e very much hope to partner with [Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell] for the next chapter," pretty much confirming a sequel.

To which exec producer Mark Burg responded by pulling his best Shia LaBeouf impersonation: Whoa, whoa, whoa! Not so fast.

"The rights are controlled by Carl [Mazzocone] and Main Line Pictures, no matter what Millennium says. Millennium simply sold the foreign rights and they will not tell us when a sequel is ready to be made. The script was developed by Carl, myself and writer/director John Luessenhop. Millennium and about ten producers came aboard only when we needed their check. Maybe they’re looking for something to sell at Berlin, but they have no right to announce this sequel and if we make another it has to be as good or better than this one and that takes time," Burg told Deadline the day following Lerner's announcement.

Regardless of what Burg said above, the sequel is going to be made. There's too much money involved to do otherwise, and Millennium's spokesperson told Deadline that the company is contractually involved in any sequel plans. So, yeah....this is nothing more than a little chest-thumping by those involved to take credit for a film's success.

Expect the sequel sometime later this year or the next.
