'Ted 2' May Be Distributed by Another Studio

After the Mark Wahlberg comedy Ted grossed over $560 million at the box office worldwide, Universal would certainly like a sequel, so much so that the studio has already announce a June 26, 2015 release date. There's just one problem.

The decision whether or not to make a sequel does not belong to Universal, according to WSJ (via IGN); it belongs to Media Rights Capital (MCR), an independent finance company with whom Universal has made a distribution agreement with.

MRC has already closed a deal with Mark Wahlberg and director Seth MacFarlane for Ted 2, and a June 2014 shoot is planned, but Universal is very much on the outside looking in.

According to sources, Universal and MRC are in talks to work something out, but a deal is unlikely to be reached. There's a very good chance another studio will be distributing Ted 2.

If a sequel make anywhere close to the first movie, this won't be a laughing matter for Universal.
