Steven Spielberg Drops Out of 'Gods and Kings'; Ang Lee Rumored to Step In

Ang Lee

Steven Spielberg seems to be all over the place with his directorial docket lately -- first we hear he's tabling Robopocalypse, now comes word that he's stepping away from the Biblical epic Gods and Kings in order to focus on...Robopocalypse.

We're starting to read all these reports with an arched eyebrow, but if Spielberg's really letting go of Gods and Kings, at least we have an interesting rumored replacement: Ang Lee.

Fresh off his Best Director Oscar for Life of Pi, Lee could be eyeing another literary adaptation, having reportedly expressed an interest in helming Warner Bros.' "gritty" Moses biopic. The studio is said to be positioning it as a "real warrior story" that will follow the Old Testament legend from birth to aged Hebrew hero -- which is a pretty tall order, but one that should be a veritable piece of cake for the guy who just picked up an Academy Award for his adaptation of an "unfilmable" book.

This should all obviously be taken with a giant grain of Middle Eastern desert sand, given that there's no cast, no projected release date, no budget, and no announcement from Warners or Lee indicating that things will start firming up anytime soon. Still, the idea of Moses whooping butt with the guy who directed Hulk behind the cameras is undeniably intriguing, no?
