'Star Wars: Episode VII' Cast Announced

Star Wars VII

Who needs to wait for May the 4th when you can just go ahead and surprise everybody with an announcement on April 29? Following months of rumors and ever-more-deafening buzz, Disney has revealed the main cast for Star Wars: Episode VII -- and just like studio chief Bob Iger promised, it does indeed include a mix of new and familiar faces.

John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will take their first trip to long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away, joining seasoned Star Wars vets Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. "We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII," enthused the studio in a press release. "It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Variety notes that while character names have not yet been publicly attached to the new cast, "sources" have indicated that "Driver will play the main villain who is meant to have a Darth Vader look to him, Isaac’s character will have a Han Solo look to him and Boyega would be a Jedi," while "the children of Solo and Princess Leia" have been rumored to "play a part in the film and that Ridley could possibly play their daughter."

There's still no word on how long production is supposed to last, but with a scheduled release date of December 18, 2015, the studio will have plenty of time and opportunity to whip fans into further frenzies with subsequent announcements.
