'Spring Breakers' Sequel in the Works

Spring Breakers

One of the surprises coming out of Cannes (via The Playlist) is that Paris-based production company Wild Bunch is making a sequel to Harmony Korine's 2013 crime drama Spring Breakers. The first of many to come?

Titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, the sequel will be about -- make sure you're not drinking anything -- bikini-clad college students fighting off an extreme militant Christian sect trying to convert them.

"It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original," Wild Bunch's Vincent Maraval said.

Korine, who wrote and directed the first movie, is not involved, and, although Maraval did say some of the old cast members will return, it's is unlikely James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, and Selena Gomez will be back.

Jonas Akerlund, who helmed the 2009 Dennis Quaid-starrer Horsemen, is directing from a script by Irvine Welsh -- yes, the Irvine Welsh who wrote the Trainspotting novel.
