Sigourney Weaver to Lead Stallone's 'ExpendaBelles'?

Aliens

With Expendables 3 right around the corner, and reportedly bringing Sylvester Stallone's all-star middle-aged action franchise to an end (none too soon, according to critics), thoughts are turning to Stallone's plans for a female-led spinoff, the somewhat insultingly titled ExpendaBelles. According to producer Avi Lerner, it'll happen sooner than later.

Speaking from the red carpet at an Expendables 3 premiere event, Lerner told reporters that the studio is "going to do it at the beginning of next year. We are writing the final lines of the script, we’ve got lots of ideas about who is going to be in it." Lerner refrained from offering specifics regarding those ideas, but Stallone is rumored to have his eye on one female action star in particular: Sigourney Weaver.

Weaver, who shattered gender barriers with her work as Ellen Ripley in the Alien series, would be a sensible choice for pretty much any film, although given that Stallone reportedly chuckled that he wanted her to play his character's wife, who gets "the house, the kids and my mercenaries" in their divorce, it's hard to be all that enthusiastic about hearing her name bandied about the project. It's also difficult to imagine Weaver signing on for a movie with the following synopsis:

When America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator – and instead save the scientist and the day.

We're all for seeing more of Weaver on the big screen, but not like this.
