'Saw' Writers Playing with Disney's 'Stuff of Legend'

Stuff of Legend

It looks like you can add Saw vets Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to the list of horror mavens who moved on to more family-friendly fare: the Hollywood Reporter's sources say that the duo has been hired to pen the screenplay for Disney's upcoming live-action project The Stuff of Legend.

Adapted from a graphic novel written by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith and illustrated by Charles Paul Wilson III, Legend follows the adventures of a group of toys that head "into a dark realm to rescue their owner from the infamous Boogeyman." Sounds more like an animated picture than a live-action one -- or at least a live-action/CGI hybrid -- but THR's report didn't offer details of the studio's plans for the project, and anyway, Disney probably used up all of its "animated sentient toys" credits on the Toy Story franchise, so going the "real actor" route might be a better idea.

As THR notes, Melton and Dunstan worked together on the fourth through seventh installments of Saw, as well as Piranha 3D and MGM's upcoming adaptation of The Outer Limits. And they've been known to dabble in non-genre fare, too -- they took an uncredited pass at Pacific Rim. This could be intriguing, no?
