Rupert Wyatt in Talks to Direct 'The Equalizer'

Rupert Wyatt

Nicolas Winding Refn's loss appears to be Rupert Wyatt's gain: The Rise of the Planet of the Apes director is in talks to replace Refn in the director's chair for Sony's upcoming big-screen adaptation of the '80s CBS hit series The Equalizer.

The Hollywood Reporter's sources have confirmed Wyatt's potential involvement in the film, which comes after weeks of rumors following Refn's departure because, as THR puts it, "he didn't see eye-to-eye" with star Denzel Washington.

Although the talks are described as an "early discussion" between Wyatt and the studio, he'd seem to be a natural fit for the project; his music video background matches the original series' stylish visuals, and as he proved with Apes, he knows how to handle directing action.

The original Equalizer, which ran from 1985-89, starred Edward Woodward as a retired intelligence officer who acted as a sort of roving fairy godfather with a gun for people in distress. The new film, according to THR's report, will find its protagonist "living a quiet life while working at a Home Depot, when one of his acts of kindness gets him embroiled with the Russian mob."
