Roland Emmerich Has Big Plans for Those 'Independence Day' Sequels

Independence Day

They may have spent nearly two decades getting ready to follow up 1996's Independence Day -- with sequels that, by the way, still aren't a done deal -- but give Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin credit for this much: They've got no shortage of ideas for where to take the original film's mythology next.

In fact, as they revealed during a recent interview, their plans don't end with the previously announced ID Forever parts one and two. And while Devlin admitted that "A lot of things have to align...The planets have to piece together" for those movies to happen, they could just be the beginning of a new wave of ID films.

"That’s actually what we talked a lot about," Emmerich added. "The mythology of why did the aliens come in the first place; what is the bigger story of this whole thing? And we talked a lot about swarm intelligence. [The humans] are individual intelligence. Even though we kill each other and have wars against each other, we have something special."

Continued Emmerich, "We have this domino human spirit to believe in good and overcoming enemies. It’s a little bit about that, and when you get a bigger mythology going, I think then you have the chance to do not only one or two or three but you can create a series. That’s what we want to do."

If and when this all comes together, Devlin and Emmerich would like to bring original Independence Day cast member Jeff Goldblum back for more, although it's still an open question as to how or if his co-stars Will Smith and Bill Pullman might be involved.
