Robert Redford Talks 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

Robert Redford

It sounded like one of those wild rumors that's just plausible enough to trick people into thinking it's true, but those recent reports regarding Robert Redford joining the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier were actually based in reality -- and it sounds like he had a pretty compelling reason to sign on.

"I'm doing this film because it's different. It's a new thing for me," Redford explained during a recent question-and-answer session with the Los Angeles Times. "I like the idea of stepping into new territory -- I'm excited by it. I also think it's a good bunch of people who really know what they're doing."

It also helps that Redford, who turns 77 this year, grew up during the Saturday serials era. As he put it, "I think these films are really powerful. I think they're great. This is the kind of film I would have loved to see as a kid."

Unfortunately, Redford's a little too advanced to pass muster as a believable superhero (although it's certainly tempting to imagine a young Redford as, say, Hawkeye). In The Winter Soldier, he'll be taking a role more in line with some of the characters he's played in the latter half of his career -- a senior government official, albeit one in the employ of the powerful S.H.I.E.L.D. agency led by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Redford rounds out an intriguing contingent of character actors that includes Toby Jones (returning as the nefarious Nazi scientist Arnim Zola) and Frank Grillo (who will play Cap's longtime nemesis Crossbones) -- in addition to UFC fighter Georges St. Pierre, who'll reportedly play the frequently ridiculous villain Batroc the Leaper. Like the best Marvel movies, it sounds just crazy enough to work.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled to arrive on traditional and 3D screens on April 4, 2014.
