'R.I.P.D.' Helmer Robert Schwentke Directing 'Divergent' Sequel 'Insurgent'

Divergent

With Neil Burger not returning to direct the Divergent sequel Insurgent, Lionsgate has turned to R.I.P.D. helmer Robert Schwentke, according to Deadline.

Divergent is the big screen adaptation of Veronica Roth's first novel of her sci-fi trilogy. Divergent is followed by Insurgent, which is then followed by Allegiant.

The movie stars Shailene Woodley as a teenager who lives in a society where people are segregated by their personality types once they turn 16, but there are people plotting behind the scenes to disrupt this order.

Besides the ill-received R.I.P.D., Schwentke's credits include The Time Traveler's Wife and the Bruce Willis actioner Red.

Akiva Goldsman wrote the latest draft of the script, and production is set to begin in May this year for a March 20, 2015 release.

As for why Burger is not returning, the official reason is that "as amazing as Neil is he still cannot be in two places at once and thus needs to finish post production on Divergent while we gear up to start production on Insurgent."
