Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" Gets Butchered on Rotten Tomatoes

When I was prognosticating the score for “The Counselor” on Rotten Tomatoes a couple days ago, I was thinking it would score well, especially with the talents involved; it’s directed by Ridley Scott, written by Pulitzer Prize winning author Cormac McCarthy, and stars Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, and Brad Pitt.
But how wrong I was. “The Counselor” scored an atrocious 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. I thought I may have missed a few details in the film that would clear up some things in the end, but a lot of critics concluded that it’s just a confusing mess with some unnecessary scenes that go nowhere.
The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads, “The Counselor raises expectations with its talented cast and creative crew -- then subverts them with a wordy and clumsy suspense thriller that's mercilessly short on suspense or thrills.”
That’s too bad. I went to see it because it was supposed to be a contender for this year’s Oscars. I guess awards pundits can now scratch Scott’s drugs thriller off their list.
More insult to injury, even “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,” opening on the same weekend and nowhere on anyone’s Oscars list, scored higher on the Tomatometer. At 63%, it’s nearly twice as high. Ouch.
