'Real Steel' Sequel Still (Slowly) Moving Along

Robot

What does one do after one has rocked and socked one's robots? It's a question whose answer didn't appear to be especially pressing after director Shawn Levy directed Hugh Jackman in the robot-boxin' flick Real Steel in 2011, but since the movie grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, DreamWorks greenlighted a sequel -- one that's languished in development limbo ever since, thanks to Jackman's X-Men obligations and what seems to be generally pokey work on a script.

That doesn't mean the movie's a lost cause, however. In fact, Real Steel fans can take heart -- during a recent interview, Levy insisted that he and Jackman haven't given up on more Steel.

"We've come up with some great scripts but Hugh and I would only make it if the plot feels fresh, but also the character journeys feel fresh, and we've found both but never at the same time," said Levy. "It's ongoing. I know the clock is ticking. That movie, weirdly, for a movie that did very well globally -- it did okay domestically -- but the love for Real Steel remains kind of unique as far as rabid fans who ask me all the time for another one. Hugh and I love that movie so if we can crack it, we'll make it, but I have this sense that we better make that happen soon or frankly, the audience may not be there in the same way. So we shall see."

As Screen Rant notes, there's no shortage of places a sequel could go, but Levy's surprising self-awareness regarding a follow-up's shelf life is probably pretty accurate -- and with Jackman already committed to another X-Men movie as well as a Wolverine sequel, it could be a few years before he's able to return to ringside.
