'Power Rangers' Reboot Officially Slated for Summer 2016

It doesn't have a cast or a director yet, but Lionsgate's upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie has a date: July 22, 2016.

Dubbed simply Power Rangers, the latest big-screen outing for Saban's apparently deathless franchise purports to "reimagine" the origin of the colorful team of heroes, described as "a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world."

As fans of the property's '90s TV incarnation will recall, the Power Rangers started out in Japan as Super Sentai, and were ported over to the States as part of Fox Kids TV's programming slate. Popular in syndication throughout the decade, the show inspired a pair of movies -- 1995's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and 1997's Turbo: A Power Rangers -- before temporarily going into limbo.

At present, Power Rangers shares the 7/22/16 date with Guy Ritchie's King Arthur; here's hoping that at some point, a non-retread picture manages to work its way onto that spot on the schedule.
