Paul Giamatti Talks 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Marc Webb has proven fairly adept at keeping Amazing Spider-fans on their toes with regards to the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man sequel, throwing out as many potentially troublesome signs (a blue Electro with a combover?) as potentially awesome ones (Paul Giamatti as the Rhino!). And although we've been conditioned to expect the worst out of overstuffed superhero movies -- especially since the dismal Sam Raimi-directed dud Spider-Man 3 -- there's reason to believe that Webb might be setting up something truly cool with the unwieldy cast he's assembled for Amazing Spider-Man 2: Namely, the villainous supergroup known as the Sinister Six.

Naturally, MTV had to ask Giamatti about the rumors during their recent interview, and while he didn't confirm much of anything, he may have tipped his hand just a little with his comments. Calling his character a "Russian mobster," he added, "Russians are always good villains. I have an ability to just destroy things. My accent is pretty hammy. I loved doing it. It seemed to me like an opportunity to be as over-the-top hammy as possible."

The set photos capturing Giamatti's character in enraged action certainly seem like they could be pretty hammy. But not to worry, he says; "These things are kind of operatic, so you need big old hammy actors sometimes. But I personally like doing stuff like that and I liked comic books when I was a little kid."

As for the Sinister Six? "I believe there’s a lot of stage-setting for the next film," he admitted cautiously. "There are several villains in this movie, and some of them are more foreground and important...A couple of us are more hanging around the background because I think there will be a bigger deal."

But, he hastened to add, "I don’t actually know [if it's the Sinister Six], but that seems to be what they’re doing. I'm not an idiot either, but I can't claim hard and fast knowledge of this. I won't. I can't because I don't actually know, but you and I can speculate."

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrives in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2014.
