Paul Feig Rumored to Direct 'Ghostbusters' Reboot

Like a middle-aged man still pining for the girl that got away in high school, Sony Pictures has never really stopped trying to make a third Ghostbusters movie happen, no matter how many times efforts to come up with a compelling script (often led by the franchise's biggest cheerleader, Dan Aykroyd) came to naught. For a period of time, it looked like Ghostbusters 3 would serve as a "passing of the torch" from the original stars to a new crew, but the death of cast member Harold Ramis in February put the brakes on that idea -- and presumably was part of director Ivan Reitman's decision to exit the project the following month.

Now comes word that Ghostbusters 3 is finally dead -- sort of. Director Paul Feig is reportedly in talks to helm what's being described as a complete reboot of the series, "most likely with female characters played by comedic actresses in the ghostbusting roles."

Of all the cockamamie ideas floated publicly for a new installment, this might be the most intriguing, especially given Feig's track record when it comes to bringing the funny with movies like Bridesmaids and The Heat. It's still utterly unnecessary, but if he can round up the right cast -- something he's shown he can do -- then the studio might finally have the resuscitated franchise it so desperately seeks.

Of course, this is still all conjecture at this point; as Variety's report notes, Feig is currently tied up directing Melissa McCarthy in Spy, with "several new scripts in development at Fox" ready to occupy him once that project wraps. Even if they get his signature, Sony may have to wait to get Feig on set -- and we've seen the scary things that can happen once a Ghostbusters is in development.
