'Pacific Rim' Trailer Delivers All the Giant Monsters and Robots We Asked For

Pacific Rim

Roland Emmerich and Michael Bay, eat your hearts out.

Guillermo del Toro promised us sci-fi action on a truly epic scale with Pacific Rim, and judging from the movie's first full-length trailer, he's ready to deliver with a movie that pits aliens against giant robots in an all-out war for the fate of the planet Earth.

It's high-stakes stuff, and the kind of story that can easily float off into the land of ridiculous, FX-fueled melodrama if it isn't handled correctly. But Del Toro comes with (giant) guns a-blazing in this clip, which explains why the human race is fighting for its life against aliens as big as buildings, gives us a glimpse at the freedom fighters responsible for safeguarding our future, and tosses in a few brief snippets of what appear to be an endless series of giant action set pieces.

It could all be a ruse to cover up a movie top-heavy with battles and sorely lacking in honest human drama, of course, but for now, we're thoroughly geeked to see Pacific Rim in all its full-length glory when it marches into theaters on July 12, 2013. Take a look at the trailer below, and see if you don't agree.
