'Pacific Rim 2' Films in 2015, 'Pacific Rim 3' Plans Already Being Discussed

It's going to be quite awhile before we really get an honest look at the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel -- that April 2017 release date seems awfully distant on the horizon at this point -- but if there's one person who has any idea of what we can expect, it's director/co-writer Guillermo del Toro, who recently sat down with Collider for a discussion that included a few tantalizing details.
According to del Toro, the first draft of the screenplay is in hand, and current plans call for another "4-5 months" of tinkering with it before beginning pre-production in late summer of 2015. As he put it, "We start pre-production next year in August-September and start shooting November-December next year."
Unsurprisingly, del Toro wasn't terribly forthcoming with storyline details, but he did drop a hint or two regarding overall direction -- as well as the fact that he's already looking ahead to Pacific Rim 3.
"The direction we’re going is very different from the first. Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,'" he explained. "So some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one."
