'Oz: The Great and Powerful' Sequel in the Works

Oz: The Great and Powerful

Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful is projected to open around the $80 million range this weekend, so, obviously, the studio is working on the sequel.

Mitchell Kapner, who wrote Oz with David Lindsay-Abaire, has been hired several months ago to work on the screenplay, Variety has learned.

Disney didn't reveal plot details for the sequel so we don't know if the follow-up will continue to take place before the events in The Wizard of Oz or move the story to when Dorothy drops in.

What's known, however, is that the sequel can only use what's in L. Frank Baum's novel since that's in the public domain. Those iconic ruby slippers are a no go since that addition belongs to Warner Bros. In the book, those slippers were silver.

Oz: The Great and Powerful is directed by Sam Raimi and stars James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Abigail Spencer, and Bruce Campbell.

What are Raimi's thoughts on the sequel?

"I haven't planned on directing the sequel. I did leave some loose ends for another director if they want to make the picture ... I was attracted to this story but I don’t think the second one would have the thing I would need to get me interested," Raimi said.
