Oscar 2012 Predictions: 'The Artist' Will Beat Out 'Hugo' to Win Best Picture

The Oscar telecast is this Sunday on ABC, so I'll throw out my projections on who will be heading to the Governor's Ball with a statue in hand. Since the majority of the winners have already been announced in other industry awards, it makes my job that much easier. Read on!

BEST PICTURE
While there are nine nominees here, realistically, the Best Picture race is between Hugo and The Artist. Hugo may have the big names and the technical edge, but I think The Artist will go all the way to the podium. Its wins at the BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and the DGA Awards helped to seal the deal. Another reason why I think The Artist will win? I haven't seen critics this giddy over a movie since 2002's Chicago.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
No doubt it, this one's going to Jean Dujardin. If one wins the Screen Actors Guild Award, then there's a very good chance that one will also bring home the Oscar. The best part? Dujardin wins it without uttering a word. If anyone can pull an upset though, it'll be George Clooney.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
The same reason why Jean Dujardin will win is the same reason why Viola Davis will also win. Congrats, Viola Davis! Don't follow Halle Berry's footstep and pull a Catwoman now.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
If the SAG Awards is anything to go by, Christopher Plummer is already making space on his shelf to accommodate this Oscar.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
And the Oscar for Actress in a Supporting Role goes to ... Ocatavia Spencer. With this win, The Help sweeps the Actress category. Spencer was recently cast in Diablo Cody's directorial debut called Lamb of God and Joon-ho Bong's thriller Snow Piercer.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
I need to look into the crystal ball for this one since winners of the Annie Award don't automatically win the Oscar. A case can be made for Kung Fu Panda 2 or Puss in Boots taking the prize but the crystal ball confirms that Rango will win this one.

DIRECTING
What can I say about this bunch other than they're all award worthy, but since the DGA has spoken, the winner will be The Artist's Michel Hazanavicius.

CINEMATOGRAPHY
The American Society of Cinematographers has chosen The Tree of Life so The Tree of Life it'll be.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
A Separation has 107 positive reviews to one negative review over at Rotten Tomatoes. In Darkness has 31 positive reviews to 5 negative reviews. A Separation it is for Best Foreign Language Film.

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)
The Descendants won the Writers Guild Award for Best Adapted Screenplay so it'll win this Oscar category as well. The movie is adapted from Kaui Hart Hemmings' novel by the same name.

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
If I'm not mistaken, Woody Allen's last Oscar win was in 1987 when he won Best Original Screenplay for Hannah and Her Sisters. It took him nearly 25 years to achieve this, but another Oscar is in his grasp once again for Midnight in Paris.
