Next Star Trek Movie May Begin the Five Year Mission

Star Trek

Star Trek: The Original Series was a chronicle of the five year mission of the Starship Enterprise “to explore new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” The original crew of the Enterprise lasted much more than five years, and while we’ve gotten used to Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and co. over the last five years, their five year mission may only be beginning. While speaking with the Television Critics Association for his new Starz series The Chair, Quinto suggested where the third Star Trek film could take the young Enterprise crew.

“The five year mission I think will be a part of this next film in some way or another,” Quinto said.

A third film in any series could have a feeling of finality as a trilogy. Whether or not Quinto and crew sign up for a fourth film, Kirk and Spock will always continue. “You’re right, I think we’re coming up on the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic sci-fi series in the history of the entertainment industry so I think it’s inherently an ongoing story, but I do think we’ll feel some sense of evolution in these characters that’s been building through the first two films. We all signed on for three movies so we’re coming up to the conclusion of that commitment. It will be very interesting to see how our relationships to the franchise evolve beyond that point.”

Quinto is also looking forward to screenwriter Roberto Orci directing the next Star Trek film. “Bob is definitely a purist about the Trek universe. I’ve spoken to him a number of times about his ideas and I think they’re really exciting. I’m really excited that we get to be a part of his feature directorial debut. It’ll be a different world without J.J. on set every day but it’s a family and Bob is an essential part of that family. We’re all excited to see where it goes. I think it’s in the preliminary stages now of the script being finished and polished and worked on and tightened. I imagine the phone will be ringing sometime in the next few months to talk about when we’ll go back to production.”
