A new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man is here and if I had any doubts about the movie before, they vanished with this trailer. Check it out below.

As a little bit of background, The Amazing Spider-Man is a reboot of the franchise starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Peter's girlfriend Gwen Stacy. Mary Jane Watson won't come into the story until later, if at all, so don't worry about her here.

In the previous Spider-Man movies, Peter Parker becoming the web crawler happened because of an accident (he was bit by a radioactive spider), but in this reboot, it is suggested that his missing parents may play a part somehow and there's a larger conspiracy at play.

It is the mystery of his parents and his powers that will move this movie and the subsequent sequels forward, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a crossover with the other Marvel superheroes down the line (if Sony and Marvel can work out how to divide the money, that is).

What strikes me most about the movie is the look. There's a high-tech/low-tech feel to it that reminds me a bit of Blade Runner. The night scenes have a lot of lights, but through the selective use of colors, manage to remain dark.

The Lizard may not sound like a scary villain, and he may not be. It's possible he may end up an unlikely ally of Peter's. The trailer suggests the real villain is in the background, and we may not find out who it is until the later movies.

There are enough unknowns here to make this new Spider-Man origin story worth re-visiting. On a technical level, I think the new movie surpassed those of Sam Raimi's.
