New in Theaters: 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'

Transformers: Age of Extinction

This weekend looks like it’s bringing back the onslaught of big-budget summer releases with a veritable hurricane of CGI action. Unfortunately, if critics are to be believed, the trend of quality new releases looks like it will be on continued hiatus.

This weekend’s sole new release is the latest from the robots in disguise: Transformers: Age of Extinction. Taking place shortly after the previous installment in the heavy-handed action franchise, this film once again follows the mighty Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), his fellow Autobots, and some new human counterparts (such as Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci) as in the wake of the reconstruction of their last apocalyptic battle, an ancient enemy emerges to destroy humanity for good.

Critics were decidedly unimpressed with the film, as it rated at only 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s no putting it gently—this movie is bad. All it has to offer is action—mind-numbing, exhausting action. Still, it’s a Transformers film, so a gross as large as $104 million is possible, according to Box Office Guru.
