New in Theaters: 'Oblivion'

This weekend will bear witness to something strange and rare—it doesn’t happen often, and only with large releases, but it is a true occurrence nonetheless: a weekend with only one new release.

While this is odd, it is certainly understandable: the last weekend to yield only one major release was last December, when The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey—a film that had been long awaited by just about everyone—arrived in theaters. Today’s release has been similarly hyped up and highly anticipated, and has now finally arrived: Oblivion.

The film—starring such big names as Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, and Olga Kurylenko (who some may remember as the obligatory “Bond girl” from Quantum of Solace)—tells the tale of an Earth ravaged by a menacing alien race, and a drone repairman—played by Tom Cruise—who is about to depart from an extended stay on the now-evacuated Earth and leave for the lunar settlement that currently harbors the remnant of the human race. When Cruise’s character saves a survivor of a crashed ship, however, revelations about Earth’s true fate—and that of the human race—begin to surface, and the protagonist must call upon previously unknown depths of courage to save the day.

As promising and, surprisingly, somewhat original as the film sounds, critics remain unimpressed (aren’t they always?)—Rotten Tomatoes currently rates it at 59%. While the film is visually stunning, and Cruise offers a respectable performance, some insist that there’s not quite enough substance to the script to tie the whole package together. Still, HSX predicts an opening weekend gross of $38-$44 million, so the film can’t be all bad.
