Jurassic Park 3D

This week brings an interesting combination of scares and thrills to theaters—some old, some new (well, re-done, a least), some jumps and suspense, some blood and gore.

Entering theaters this week is a revamped classic from the mind of Steven Spielberg:
Jurassic Park 3D. The famous tale, based on Michael Crichton’s scifi/suspense novel, returns to the big screen with its famous CGI enhanced with the 3D experience.

Critics, as it turns out, are rather impressed—the movie was classic the first time around, because of its epic scope and impressive effects; with its new 3D makeover, the film is even more awe-inspiring, earning it a whopping 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its expected weekend profits are between $15 million and $17.1 million, according to HSX.

Also coming out is another, more intensive remake of a classic, this time of the more ostensibly scary variety—Evil Dead. The cult horror classic returns to the big screen so audiences can be again captivated by demonic possession and lots of violence and gore.

This film also received a fresh rating on the Tomatometer, a respectable 65%. Some say that, without some of the odd humor of the original, the remake is a little bland by comparison; others say that the more straightforward horror-film take lets it stand on its own, rather than be just another disappointing reboot. Either way, its weekend gross is predicted to be $24.5-$28 million.
