New in Theaters: 'Identity Thief,' 'Side Effects'

Identity Thief

This week's releases offer another polarized group of films--both in terms of genre and, unfortunately, quality.

Opening today is Identity Thief, a comedy featuring a sales rep that has had his identity stolen, and his accounts are looking the worse for the wear. He finds the culprit in Miami, and has to find some way to clear his name—involving a long road trip the likes of which has been become B-list comedy’s bread and butter recently.

The film received a 28% from Rotten Tomatoes, on the grounds that the script is half-baked, and contains insufficient laughs to sustain the tired story. According to HSX, the film can expect between $17 million and $21.1 million on its opening weekend.

Also coming out today to redeem this lackluster release is Side Effects, a thriller that tells of a happy New York couple whose life becomes quite a bit more complicated when an anxiety drug has some dark, unexpected—you guessed it—side effects.

Rotten Tomatoes was much more impressed with this release, giving it an 81%; the story, while a bit convoluted, features several gripping twists and turns, and carries them out in an intelligent, engaging way. This release, however, is only predicted to earn between $11 million and $16 million.
