New in Theaters: 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' 'Get On Up'

Guardians of the Galaxy

This is the big one, ladies and gents. If you spend any time on the internet at all, you’ve probably heard a million and one things about this film already—it’s time to see if it measures up to the considerable hype it has generated over the last several months. Here comes Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Chris Pratt takes the lead as a renegade among renegades (he is joined by Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, and David Bautista) who, after stealing from some unsavory folks, must team up with his fellow outcasts (which include such unlikely allies as a gun-toting raccoon and a walking, talking tree) to not just bring down the bad guys, but survive.

As has become a sort of tradition with new Marvel films, critics are loving it—the film currently sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is as full of humor and ridiculousness as its source comic, and further manages to turn potential weaknesses such as its more silly bits into strengths. The Box Office Guru predicts a whopping $72 million in weekend earnings.

You wouldn’t know it from the uneven division of hype this weekend, but there is another new release this weekend: Get On Up. This film stars Chadwick Boseman as the iconic James Brown in a biographical film detailing the meteoric rise of one of the first pioneers of soul.

While this film’s release isn’t accompanied by quite as much hype, it is also being quite well-received, receiving a Tomatometer rating of 76%. While the accuracy and depth of this retelling of James Browns’ life are dubious, there’s no arguing against the charisma that Boseman brings to the role, and the electricity that he brings to the film. The film’s expected to earn a more modest $15 million over the weekend.
