New in Theaters: 'Alex Cross', 'Paranormal Activity 4'

Alex Cross is one of those rare movies that the multi-hyphanate Tyler Perry didn't write or direct himself. Perry stars as a detective who is based on the character from James Patterson's novels. The character was previously played by Morgan Freeman in Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls back in the late '90s.

Unlike the previous movies, Alex Cross is not based on any of Patterson's novels, but is an original creation. But like the novels, Cross has to stop a deranged serial killer, who is played by a buffed-up Matthew Fox.

There's just only one problem. As a thriller, the movie is not particularly thrilling, and it is not helped by Rob Cohen's ineffective direction from a screenplay that focuses too much on the personal lives of Cross and his partner played by Ed Burns.

With a Tomatometer of 13%, Alex Cross is not a good debut for Perry the action hero. The movie is projected for a $14-$16 million opening weekend, but Friday's $4 million figure points to the lower end of that projection.

The fourth entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise is off to a really good start. The movie made $15 million on Friday and may go on to have a $33 million plus weekend debut.

While that's significantly less than the $52 million Paranormal Activity 3 made in its opening weekend, I'm sure Paramount is happy with that figure considering Paranormal Activity 4 only cost only $5 million to make.

Fans of the series will be happy to learn that the formula is largely unchanged in Paranormal Activity 4, and that's what's good and bad about the movie. For a quick scare, PA 4 serves its purpose, but anyone looking for something new will have to look elsewhere.

Paranormal Activity 4 has a Tomatometer of 29%.
