New in Theaters: ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ ‘Blended’

X-Men: Days of Future Past

This weekend may see something spectacular happen—the Phoenix-like rebirth (pun only slightly intended) of a franchise with a shaky past, as Marvel takes a potential huge step forward with the X-Men series. To make sure this weekend isn’t too exciting, however, this phenomenon is tempered by the release of another Adam Sandler comedy.

This weekend brings us another potential blockbuster for Marvel: X-Men: Days of Future Past. The film features plenty of old favorites from the first trilogy of films (Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen among them) as well as familiar faces from the newer First Class (such as James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence) as past and future mutants unite to fight a threat that could end mankind and mutants alike.

The folks at Rotten Tomatoes thought very highly of the film, rating it at 91%. The special effects, star-studded cast, and engaging plot all work together to make this film one of the best installments in the franchise—it might even be good enough to redeem X-Men: The Last Stand and the first Wolverine movie. The Box Office Guru certainly has faith in the film, predicting a weekend gross as large as $60 million.

On the less optimistic side of things, we have Blended, a rom-com co-starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, who play single parents who went on a disastrous blind date and agreed that another meeting between them would be awkward at best. Lo and behold, they meet again on separately planned family trips to the safari, and their forced contact brings about comedic hijinks.

Well, sort of—the film’s Tomatometer rating of 15% would suggest otherwise. The faults are many and of varying degrees, but one thing is certain—the film does nothing right. Still, a little acting pedigree can go a long way, which may earn the film as much as $26 million this weekend.
