Star Trek Into Darkness

We are well on our way into this year’s batch of super-hyped summer releases—this week introduces one of the year’s bigger, more highly-anticipated titles. This week gives us a sequel to one of the greatest nerd franchises of all time—from the mind of J.J. Abrams, a man rapidly gaining esteem in the eyes of geeks everywhere, coming out this week is Star Trek: Into Darkness.

The film picks up with the alternate-reality storyline established by the first Star Trek film Abrams released in 2009; the fleet of the iconic starship Enterprise is called back to Earth to find the Federation fleet decimated; the crew must embark on a perilous journey to find who is responsible and bring them to justice—the task, as one might expect, is more difficult than anticipated, testing loyalty, friendship, and love along the way.

The critics are fairly impressed with the film—Rotten Tomatoes currently rates the film at an impressive 87%. Most critics agree that the film pays proper homage to the tone and legacy of the legendary franchise while maintaining its originality, and balancing high-octane action with an adequate script and characters—overall, it seems Abrams has done it again. The film is predicted to earn impressive revenues over the weekend—anywhere between $88 million and $91 million, according to HSX.
