After a few weeks that were chock-full of new releases—three or four new films a week—this weekend gives movie-goers (and certain grateful columnists) a break, as there is but one new release opening in theaters today: the sequel to David Twohy’s popular action/sci-fi franchise, Riddick.

Vin Diesel reprises his role as Riddick, the hero of questionable moral content, as he attempts to survive on a barren desert planet he’s been left to die upon. He soon finds himself beset not only by the ferocious alien inhabitants of this world, but the equally dangerous bounty hunters that respond to the beacon he sent in an attempt to escape. Needless to say, violence follows.

The film received a not-quite-fresh rating of 59% (so close!) on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has plenty to offer for fans of the series and hardcore sci-fi action, but that’s about it—it’s an action film, through and through. Box Office Guru predicts an opening weekend gross of $19 million for the film.
