New Plot Details Surface for 'Thor: The Dark World'

Thor the Dark World

The first rule of sequels is that you have to make everything bigger (as well as better, if you can help it), so we kind of figured Marvel had some pretty heavy stuff in store for the God of Thunder in Thor: The Dark World. And now, thanks to executive producer Craig Kyle, we have a clearer idea of what he'll be up against.

Given the movie's title, we already knew we'd be seeing the Dark Elves, a band of baddies led by the nasty Malekith, whose quest for the Asgardian artifact known as the Casket of Ancient Winters led to one of Thor's better-known comic quests during the '80s. But as it turns out, Malekith and his crew are only part of the peril facing the distinctively helmeted Norseman and his allies.

Screen Rant reports that The Dark World will pick up a year after The Avengers, and find Thor locked in all-out war with a group of "rag-tag invaders known as the Marauders." Who are these Marauders? Kyle isn't saying just yet, but he did reveal that their presence is what thins the Asgardian army enough to let Malekith and the Dark Elves pull off their attack.

Kyle went on to promise that The Dark World would offer a more in-depth look at Thor's environs, calling it "a take that allows us to get more into the nooks and crannies of Asgard and its people. ... It’s a very complicated blend [of genres: high science fiction, gritty fantasy, and realism]."

Sounds tricky all right, but we still remember when people didn't think anyone would show up for an Iron Man movie, and when they laughed at the idea of the first Thor picture, so we're inclined to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt here -- and looking forward to judging the end results when Thor: The Dark World arrives in theaters on November 8, 2013.
