The New 'Lone Ranger' Trailer Is Here, Kemo Sabe

The Lone Ranger

What possesses a man to put on a mask and holler "Hi ho Silver, away"?

All is revealed in the first full-length trailer for Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger, which stars Armie Hammer as the titular justice-seeking horseman and Johnny Depp as his Native American sidekick, Tonto: Who the Ranger was in his past life, how he met Tonto, and what prompted him to become the Wild West's premier hero to the oppressed.

Aside from the setup for the movie's plot, the trailer also makes a few things abundantly clear: One, we can expect to get a lot of deadpan humor from Depp's Tonto; two, Verbinski really wants those 3D tickets to be worth the surcharge; and three, all that origin exposition will eventually give way to blazing fireballs of CGI-coated action.

All of which is to be expected, honestly, but it's still hard not to feel at least a slight pang of disappointment when this trailer trades Hammer and Depp's banter for over-the-top set pieces. More than anything, it feels like The Lone Ranger by way of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes -- which is fun for what it is, but doesn't really have much to do with the spirit of the character.

On the other hand, it seems just about perfect for a summer blockbuster -- and given that The Lone Ranger is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 3, 2013, this trailer's loud, quasi-schizophrenic tone only makes sense. Check it out below.
