New 'Jack Reacher' Trailer Posted

Jack Reacher

We heard (and, okay, did) a lot of snickering when Tom Cruise was cast as Jack Reacher, the very tall, very large hero at the center of Lee Child's bestselling series -- but we should have known better.

Love him or hate him, Cruise is arguably the most determined actor in Hollywood, and if this just-released new trailer is anything to go on, he's brought all of his steely-eyed frenzy to bear on Jack Reacher. Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie isn't using camera trickery to make Cruise a better physical fit for the part as it was written in the books, but he sure does look dangerous.

And he isn't the only one -- as you may have already guessed, Werner Herzog makes a pretty formidable villain in the clip, which devotes most of its 151-second running time to shots of Reacher kicking ass and dealing with assorted peril, with plenty of room for quips and staring into the medium distance.

Jack Reacher is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 21, 2012.
