Michael Bay Reveals Optimus Prime's 'Transformers 4' Facelift

Transformers 4

It's going to be awhile before the Transformers franchise reboots itself with Age of Extinction, but like a kid with a brand-new toy, Michael Bay is already busy revealing glimpses of what fans can expect when Mark Wahlberg takes the screen as part of a newly revamped human cast next year. And actually, since nobody cares about the human anything when it comes to the Transformers movies, what really matters is that he's just given us our first look at the most important Transformer of all: Optimus Prime.

Ol' Optimus has been given a fresh look for Age of Extinction, and Empire Magazine has the exclusive scoop on what's new, courtesy of a large feature dedicated to one of 2014's biggest ready-made blockbusters. It's all laid out in that cover image, which shows Prime deviating from his standard red-and-blue color scheme and morphing into more of a sword-wielding Pacific Rim-style robot. How this ties into the story (or if there even is much of a story) is anyone's guess, but in the meantime, this image is sort of fun to look at.

Screen Rant has something of a synopsis for the human cast, which goes a little something like this:

Pictured alongside Optimus on the Empire cover is Wahlberg as a gearhead named Cade, alongside his daughter (Nicola Peltz) and her hot-shot car racer boyfriend (Jack Reynor). While the individual parts may have changed, the bare-bones Transformers formula looks to be carried over into Age of Extinction. Hence, the father-daughter conflict between Wahlberg and Peltz will serve as the “heart” of the film, in addition to being a cost-cutting measure for the expensive CGI Transformers (a la Shia LaBeouf’s storyline throughout the previous three movies).

Somehow we doubt any father-daughter strife will be what puts butts in seats when Transformers: Age of Extinction blasts into theaters on June 27, 2014, but we'll find out next summer, won't we? Until then, here's a big robot with a sword for you.
