Michael Bay Promises a 'Redesigned' Franchise with 'Transformers 4'

Transformers 4

He's far from the most critically beloved director working in Hollywood today, but Michael Bay excels at two things: Blowing stuff up and trolling the movie press. Judging from remarks he made while talking to Forbes for a recent profile piece, it sounds like he's doing a little bit of both with Transformers 4.

Since clambering back on board the Transformers franchise last year, Bay has vigorously maintained that the series' fourth installment won't be a reboot, despite the fact that it's carrying a completely different (human) cast. He held the party line when talking to Forbes -- sort of. In classic Bay fashion, he signaled that he intends to have his cake and eat it too.

"The history of the first three movies is still there. We start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting a new cast," explained Bay. "We keep the Transformers the way they were. It’s just four years later."

So far, so good. But then in his next breath, he made a 180: "There’s a reason the Transformers are redesigned. We’re trying to broaden the franchise and give it more places to go."

Got all that? It isn't a reboot, because it maintains narrative continuity (har, har, har!) and the Transformers are being kept the way they were. But there's a reason they've been redesigned! Please don't ever change, Michael Bay. We probably won't be in the audience for Transformers 4 on June 27, 2014, but it sure is entertaining watching it come together.
