Matt Reeves Will Return to Direct 'Planet of the Apes 3'

Matt Reeves

While Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the followup to 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, won't be in theaters until this summer, Fox liked what they saw in an early cut and is setting in motion the next sequel by locking up director Matt Reeves, Deadline has learned.

Reeves will co-write the script with Mark Bomback, and it is expected they will work on Planet of the Apes 3 after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is completed.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver will return to produce with Peter Chernin.

Reeves came on board to replace Rupert Wyatt when the latter dropped out of directing the Planet of the Apes sequel when he and the studio couldn't agree on the vision of the movie.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be in theaters on July 11 and will star Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, and Andy Serkis.
