Marvel Releases First Image from 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier,' Spills Casting Details

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel Studios has begun production on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and they're celebrating by releasing the sequel's first still -- as well as a few tantalizing tidbits of information regarding the plot.

As the press release puts it, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier will pick up where Marvel’s The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C."

That isn't a ton of information, although it does indicate a sizable role for Scarlett Johansson, who's reprising the Black Widow role after playing her in The Avengers. And she's got a lot of company in the supporting cast, which Marvel says will include Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford as well as "Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow and Georges St-Pierre as Georges Batroc. Rounding out the talented cast are Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Emily VanCamp as Agent 13 and Maximiliano Hernández as Agent Jasper Sitwell."

Atwell and Jones' names raise the question of whether one or both of them will be featured in flashbacks -- in the comics, Arnim Zola had a long post-WWII career in crime, but given all the names on this list, it might be expecting too much for The Winter Soldier to do much more than acknowledge his and Carter's place in Cap's history.

In any event, Chris Evans looks suitably heroic in this still -- and we can certainly expect a lot more of these Winter Soldier teasers between now and when the film arrives in theaters on April 4, 2014.
