Weekend Box Office Report: 'Neighbors' Trashes Everyone on the Charts

5:07 PM 5/11/2014 by Logan Falk
One of this weekend’s new releases pulled a fast one on the box office, making well above its predicted earnings and dominating the charts over every other release, both new and old. It was no contest—this weekend belonged to Neighbors.

New in Theaters: 'Neighbors,' 'Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return'

The second week of movie summer brings us as schizophrenic a set of releases as can be—one is an R-rated (and very rightly so) comedy, and the other a light animated feature for the whole family. At this point, the familiar line to trot out is, “Well, there’s something for everyone!” However, if the critics are to be believed, this is only the case if you have low standards for animated films.

Weekend Box Office Report: 'Spiderman' Pulls in Amazing Revenues

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
The sole new release this weekend kicked summer off in a big way, topping the charts with earnings that fulfilled fully the generous projected range it was given. Despite the misgivings of old and new fans alike, The Amazing Spiderman 2 proved that it has enough merit to rival the old trilogy, at least in terms of earnings.

New in Theaters: 'The Amazing Spiderman 2'

The Amazing Spiderman 2
This weekend kicks off three months of highly-anticipated summer releases with a new film from a Marvel franchise that hasn’t exactly done stellar as of late—it’s suffered the growing pains of a reboot and the skepticism of an audience that wanted the series to go in a different direction. This weekend, we’ll see if the sequel can redeem the franchise—let’s see what The Amazing Spiderman 2.

Weekend Box Office Report: 'Captain America' Gives in to 'The Other Woman'

The Other Woman
After several weeks full of new releases doing their best to dethrone Marvel’s latest film, Captain America finally relinquished its spot atop the charts to one of the new releases. It was kind of a lukewarm weekend for everyone involved, however. Despite a plot heavily geared toward a female audience, The Other Woman pulled in the highest earnings this weekend, making well above its projected range at $24.7 million.

New in Theaters: 'The Other Woman,' 'Brick Mansions,' 'The Quiet Ones'

The Other Woman
This weekend is looking pretty grim in terms of new releases—while last weekend had the small consolation of an entertaining nature documentary to brighten up an otherwise mediocre batch of films, this week has nothing fresh to offer. So, let’s not waste any time, and see what the damage is.

Weekend Box Office Report: 'Captain America' Tops Charts Once More

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Marvel’s releases always have impressive box office longevity, and their latest film is no exception. Despite a hoard of new releases flooding the box office vying for a decent weekend gross, the latest Marvel film remains at the top (although, it probably owes a little to the fact that three of the four new releases failed to get a positive consensus from critics).

New in Theaters: 'Transcendence,' 'A Haunted House 2,' 'Heaven is For Real,' 'Bears'

This is another jam-packed weekend, with an almost comical variety of films opening in theaters: a drama that takes itself too seriously, a comedy that doesn’t take itself seriously enough, a decent drama with a strong religious streak, and a Disney nature documentary.

Weekend Box Office Report: 'Rio 2' Nearly Unseats 'Captain America'

Captian America: The Winter Soldier
With the titanic numbers that the latest Marvel film has been pulling in for the last week, no one expected any of the new releases to beat it to the top of the box office; so, it was no surprise when this did not happen. What was surprising was how close one of the new releases—which was rated somewhat mediocrely—came to doing so.

New in Theaters: 'Rio 2,' 'Oculus,' 'Draft Day'

To contrast last week’s single release, this weekend brings a sizeable batch of new releases, with a fairly large variety of genre, plot, and quality. That being said, this weekend’s fare is still a great deal better (or at least better-rated) than the vast majority of the last several weeks’ worth of mediocre films.
