Weekend Box Office Report: ’22 Jump Street’ Hops Up to Top Spot

3:40 PM 6/15/2014 by Logan Falk
22 Jump Street
This may be the first time in history that a highly-anticipated (not to mention highly-rated) animated film was topped in earnings by a fellow new release—and an R-rated comedy, to boot. Still, despite the less varied audience, 22 Jump Street managed to top the charts.

New in Theaters: 'How to Train Your Dragon 2,' '22 Jump Street'

22 Jump Street
This looks to be yet another busy weekend—both new releases are sequels that have been long-awaited by fans of the original films for months on end, and both films have been receiving excellent reviews. Additionally, the films will attract very different audiences, so droves of moviegoers will flock to theaters this weekend.

Weekend Box Office Report: 'TFiOS' Conquers

The Fault in Our Stars
As much as critics bemoan the continued release of young adult movies, the industry will not slow down for years and years to come, for one simple reason: they make lots of money, provided the cast and crew do a decent job. This weekend illustrated this point nicely, especially since the movie in question was actually very well-received.

New in Theaters: 'Edge of Tomorrow,' 'The Fault in Our Stars'

Edge of Tomorrow
This is going to be a good weekend for moviegoers—the two films arriving in theaters today have received a great deal of positive feedback from critics, and are different enough to offer something for just about everybody, including those who are choosy in terms of film quality (how many weekends can you say that about?).

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Maleficent’ Takes Box Office by Storm

Maleficent
With the incredible amount of hype this film is getting, it’s hardly a surprise that Disney’s latest release, despite the skepticism voiced by many-a critic, fulfilled the high expectations set by its predicted gross. This weekend, the box office belongs to Maleficent.

New in Theaters: 'Maleficent,' 'A Million Ways to Die in the West'

A Million Ways to Die in the West
This weekend offers no respite for the busy box office, as yet another long-awaited release makes its way into theaters—a long-awaited Disney release, to boot. It’s also accompanied by a big release from a prominent name in modern comedy, to top off an already crazy-looking weekend.

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘X-Men’ Conquers the Charts

X-Men: Days of Future Past
It’s not uncommon for a particularly successful film to earn above and beyond its predicted earnings; it is rare, however, for a film to earn a full $30 million higher than it was predicted to. This weekend saw such a phenomenon, as moviegoers stormed the box office to see X-Men:

New in Theaters: ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ ‘Blended’

X-Men: Days of Future Past
This weekend may see something spectacular happen—the Phoenix-like rebirth (pun only slightly intended) of a franchise with a shaky past, as Marvel takes a potential huge step forward with the X-Men series. To make sure this weekend isn’t too exciting, however, this phenomenon is tempered by the release of another Adam Sandler comedy.

Weekend Box Office Report: 'Godzilla' Tramples its Way to the Top

6:24 PM 5/18/2014 by Logan Falk
Godzilla
It seems the world was definitely ready for a Godzilla reboot, as the monster’s presence in the box office was nearly as big as that on-screen. All half-clever word play aside, its revenues were enormous: there was very little contest as to which release, new or old, would take the lion’s share of box office earnings.

New in Theaters: 'Godzilla,' 'Million Dollar Arm'

Million Dollar Arm
This is a good weekend for new releases: today sees the rebirth of a legendary franchise, as well as a feel-good Disney film based on a true story. The best part? Both films are certified fresh (if only just), which is a real rarity.
