Guardians of the Galaxy
After yet another weekend of disappointing new releases, it’s small wonder that holdover films would once again rule the box office. This time, however, it was a well-rated film that took the top spot (as it should be, really). This weekend went to the Guardians of the Galaxy.

New in Theaters: 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,' 'If I Stay'

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
The last weeks of summer seem to be following the unfortunate trend of a continuous stream of mediocre releases. The two movies arriving in theaters today haven’t been receiving hardly any positive reviews; it’s not going to be pretty any way you slice it, so let’s get to it.

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Turtles’ Take the Box Office Once More

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Given that this week’s set of new releases received overwhelmingly bad reviews (and don’t have quite enough hype to fill the holes left by shoddy filmmaking), the way the charts played out isn’t super surprising—this weekend, the holdover films remained at the top, and the new releases were relegated to lower spots.

New in Theaters: ‘The Expendables 3,’ ‘The Giver,’ ‘Let’s Be Cops’

The Giver
This weekend brings an interesting mix of new releases to theaters—we have some tongue-in-cheek mindless action, some young-adult dystopian literature-turned-film, and a risqué buddy cop comedy (sort of). The good news: a wide spectrum of genres that would normally attract lots of moviegoers. The bad news: not one of the new releases is getting good reviews, which may scare any moviegoers away.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Sometimes there’s no accounting for taste, especially where hyped-up summer releases are concerned. Despite receiving largely negative reviews, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was able to power its way to the top of the box office charts. Still, perhaps this isn’t too surprising—Michael Bay has a talent for defying bad critical reception and making a bunch of money anyway.

New in Theaters: 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,' 'Step Up: All In,' 'Into the Storm,' 'The Hundred-Foot Journey'

The Hundred-Foot Journey
After last weekend’s box office blowout, any quality release would have a hard time topping it—unfortunately, only one of them is rated well, so they have almost no chance. It’s going to be a sad weekend no matter how you slice it, so let’s get to it.

Weekend Box Office Report: The 'Guardians' Are On Fire

Guardians of the Galaxy
With the insane, many-month long anticipation of Marvel’s latest film in the Avengers-driven story arc, it is no surprise whatsoever that Guardians of the Galaxy had no trouble whatsoever bringing in incredible earnings, and subsequently conquering the box office. This is as straightforward as weekend charts ever get, so let’s get to it.

New in Theaters: 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' 'Get On Up'

Guardians of the Galaxy
This is the big one, ladies and gents. If you spend any time on the internet at all, you’ve probably heard a million and one things about this film already—it’s time to see if it measures up to the considerable hype it has generated over the last several months. Here comes Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Lucy’ Conquers

Since the theaters have been going through a dry spell of sorts for quality films, the first batch of certified fresh releases were able to make a good showing of themselves—one in particular was able to make a good deal above its predicted gross, and easily make its way to the top of the charts.

New in Theaters: 'Hercules,' 'Lucy,' 'And So It Goes'

This weekend is looking up a little from the last few weeks of mostly grim cinema—three new releases hit the theaters today, and while none are receiving rave reviews, they are certainly above the meager average ratings of the last few weekends.
