Li Bingbing Joins 'Transformers 4'

Li Bingbing

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Resident Evil: Retribution's Li Bingbing is boarding Michael Bay's Transformers 4 in an unspecified role. She's the first Chinese actor announced for the movie.

We learned back in April that four speaking roles will be opened to two professional and two amateur actors through a Chinese reality TV show. It is doubtful an actress of Li's stature got the role through this unusual casting process (can anyone confirm?), but if she's a lock in the first place, her participation will help boost the awareness of both the reality show and the next Transformers movie in China.

According to the report, Paramount is co-producing the movie with two Chinese companies, China Movie Channel and Jiaflix Enterprises, to get around China's quota on foreign films and to also allow the studio to take a larger cut of the Chinese box office.

What this means is that part of the movie will have to be made in China and will have to use local talent, both in front of the camera and behind.

Transformers 4 is set four years after the events in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and will feature a new cast led by Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci, Nicola Peltz, and Jack Reynor. Michael Bay is returning to direct in what may be his final Transformers movie before handing it over to someone else.

Filming is scheduled to begin in July for a June 27, 2014 release.
