Karen Gillan's Shaved Guardians of the Galaxy Hair Is Her Selfie Wig

Karen Gillan

When you see Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan in Guardians of the Galaxy, you might not recognize her with a shaved head and blue body. She looks like her old self again in her upcoming ABC comedy Selfie, and the reason is because Marvel saved her hair for her.

“I have my own hair that I shaved off that Marvel made into a wig for me, so I’m going to be wearing that,” Gillan told the Television Critics Association today. “They shaved my hair off for the role and then they made an amazing wig out of it. They took it strand by strand and put it into the wig. They offered it to me so that was really nice.”

Gillan was more than happy to shave it all off to play Nebula in the film. “That was a rule that was in place before I even auditioned for the role so I knew I had to if I got it. I was like absolutely, because I didn’t think I was going to get it. I wanted to do it though because to transform for a part is the reason that I’m acting.”

Guardians of the Galaxy will be the first time Gillan plays a character who does not even look like her. “I think that’s been the biggest transformation for me so far. I shaved my hair off and I’m blue so that’s new. I felt more intimidating when I was playing the villain role in Guardians because of the hair change, so that was really good for me. It did half of the work for me.”

Selfie is a comedy about a social media obsessed woman learning to relate better to people, but Gillan has no plans to abandon sci-fi. “Oh, sci-fi’s been the best to me. I want to continue working in genre stuff because I think that it has amazing female roles and we get to do a range of emotions, comedy and drama.”

Should we find out that Nebula survives the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Gillan is game to reprise her role in any other Marvel movie. “Oh, absolutely. I had such a good time working with Marvel. They’re the best company to work for, really amazing. I love the role. I won’t say anything too much because it will be a spoiler what happens to her in the film, but I had the best time playing that role. I really did.”

Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1.
